David Kendall BA(Hons) BArch(Hons) RIBA

David Andrew Kendall was born in 1958 in Halifax, West Yorkshire. He studied architecture at Newcastle University and Urban Design at the Royal Academy of Fine Art, Copenhagen, graduating with First Class Honours in July 1983.

David spent 12 months working in the Newcastle office of Ralph Erskine Arkitectkonter AB during his University education.

On graduation David joined Jane and David Darbyshire, Chartered Architects and was involved in the Practice's growing workload in the residential and health care projects.

When Jane Darbyshire left the practice to form Jane Darbyshire Associates, David joined the Ryder Nicklin Partnership to gain contrasting experience in the field of commercial and industrial building. In 1990 he rejoined Jane Darbyshire as a partner in the Practice.

David's work at the practice has included Urban Renewal projects in North Tyneside, Darlington, Durham City & Cheshire. In May 1994 the completed scheme for the conversion of the Free Library of 1856 to provide a Business Advice Centre in North Shields. This formed part of a comprehensive project tackling urban decay in the area. It included new build offices and business units, a job centre, conversion and infill of existing derelict properties for mixed use and a prestigious new riverside housing development for Wimpey Homes at Union Square, the overall project received a BURA Award in 2003. He also designed a scheme for Two Castles Housing Association at Sedbergh which received National Awards recognition.

David was Project Architect for the Riverside Childcare Training Centre a £3.2 million development of a new building type, as well as for the £1.3 million Sure Start scheme in Blyth. His work in the sports field has included The Parks Sports Centre, a £8 million indoor sports facility, the £1m dry sports extension to an existing pool complex at Prudhoe Waterworld, Tynedale and involvement with 5 No Sports and Art schemes for Primary Schools in Newcastle City.

David's housing designs at Aykley Heads Farm in Durham received a RIBA Housing Design Award as well as a North East Civic Trust Award for West Barn, Aykley Heads. His work in Chester for Bryant Homes at the old Royal Infirmary site has been exceedingly well received. More recently David has worked on a number of projects based on sustainable principles with developer Rivergreen Developments Ltd such as offices at Aykley Heads and housing at Amble.

As well as his work for the Practice David acts as an Assessor for the Civic Trust Awards. David lives in Newcastle upon Tyne and is married with four children. David's work has also been selected for display at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition.
